Welcome to the Governors’ section of the Ridgeway Academy website which I hope you will find interesting and informative.
Opportunities have arisen for new School Governors at Ridgeway Academy. Becoming a school governor is a rewarding role and will allow you the opportunity to use your skills and attributes to have a positive impact on the education of all the students in our school. You will be able to develop and learn new skills, take on different challenges and work as part of an established and successful Governing Body with a record of successful mentoring and support. School governors have a varied and important role, helping the school run effectively. They have 3 core functions: The governor role is strategic rather than operational. Governors don’t get involved with the day to day running of a school, instead supporting and challenging the school’s leadership team to drive school improvement. Governors usually attend around 6- 10 meetings a year and will occasionally need to come into school during the school day. On average governors say they spend about 7 hours per month on governor work and their term of office is for 4 years. Being a school governor is a commitment and a responsibility but offers you the chance to see first-hand the impact you can make in improving education for students in your community. You don’t need to be an experienced professional – it’s about attitude as well as expertise School governing boards need skilled people to help them run effectively We need people who, as well as having integrity and high ethical standards, have the ability to Some understanding of areas such as HR, financial management and accountancy and legal expertise could be helpful but is not essential. Most importantly we are looking for people who are committed to improving the life chances of our students and can give the time to do this. At each meeting we receive reports from the head, senior leadership team and other leaders. Some items are discussed at most meetings e.g. Safeguarding, Attendance and SEND. Other items are discussed a specific points in the year e.g. exam results, plan for school improvement and budget. There is also a strategic committee comprised of experienced governors and school leaders. Additionally we have an admissions committee. In addition each governor is linked to a specific area of the school e.g. child protection, behaviour, well being and SEND. In this role governors come into school to meet with staff and students.
