Sport is a vital and exciting part of life at Ridgeway Academy. We believe it is essential in nurturing skills, confidence and a life-long love of sporting activities ensuring students are ‘Fit for Life’.

Key Stage 3
The curriculum is built on key stage 2 and develops the core skills Ridgeway Academy feel are important to our students in order for them to ‘succeed and excel’ in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities.
All students receive two one hour lessons a week. Throughout the year all students will experience a wide range of physical activities. students follow courses in various activities such as athletics, football, dance, gymnastics, trampolining, basketball, rugby, hockey, netball, tennis, cricket, rounders, badminton, volleyball and health related fitness.
These activities are taught in either in single sex classes or mixed where students follow a programme of study that aims to develop both fitness and skill level for all. Examples of rotations that a student would expect to study can be seen below:

Key Stage 4
All students receive four one-hour core PE lessons a week across a two-week timetable. Students extend their learning from activities in key stage three and follow a programme, which allows them to gain more specialised knowledge and experience of these sports with the emphasis on lifelong participation.
These activities are taught in mixed sex classes where students follow a programme of study that aims to develop both fitness and skill level for all.
As well as taking part in core physical education lessons students can also choose to study an examination level. For example, in these lessons’ students may follow one of the following courses:
Cambridge National (OCR)
The Cambridge National is designed with practical and engaging ways of teaching in mind and enable students to develop a range of skills through involvement in sport and physical activity. The course will develop their ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical situations in order to gain a better understanding of the complexity of different areas of sport and the sports industry. It can be split depending on the cohort strengths:
OCR Level 2 Cambridge National Certificate in Sports Studies
On this course students will study four units of which one is an exam the other are based on written units:

At Ridgeway Academy students will study the Level 3 Cambridge Technical in Sport and Physical Activity. There is a high expectation that students who are on the PE course assist the PE Faculty during lesson time and with extra-curricular practices.

Learners can re-sit an examined unit twice before they complete the qualification. The qualification is graded Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*
The course can lead to careers in sports management, teaching, sports massage, sports physiotherapy, sports psychology, sports coaching, personal training and many more.
Level 2 Sports/Community Sports Leadership (SLQ)
At Ridgeway Academy, sixth form students have the opportunity to study the Level 2 Qualification in Sports/Communication Sports Leadership within their enrichment programme. There is a high expectation that students who are on the Sports Leadership course assist the PE Faculty during lesson time and with the primary school sports partnership.
On this course, students will follow three mandatory units:
Unit 1 – Developing leadership skills
Unit 2 – Plan, lead and evaluate sport/physical activity sessions
Unit 3 – Assist in planning and leading a sports/physical activity event
Students will then follow Unit 4 or 5 dependant on where they do their 10 hours demonstration of leadership:
Unit 4 – Lead sport/physical activity sessions linked with the centre
Unit 5 – Lead sport/physical activity sessions in the community
Level 3 Sports Leadership (SLQ)
At Ridgeway Academy, sixth form students also have the opportunity to study the Level 3 Qualification in Sports Leadership within their enrichment programme. There is a high expectation that students who are on the Sports Leadership course assist the PE Faculty during lesson time and with the primary school sports partnership. The Level 3 qualification awards students 16 UCAS tariff points on certification.
On this course, students will follow four mandatory units:
Unit 1 – Developing leadership skills
Unit 2 – Plan, lead and evaluate a sports/physical activity event
Unit 3 – Lead safe sport/physical activity sessions
Unit 4 – Plan, lead and evaluate sport/physical activity sessions for children
Students must then complete two units from Units 5, 6 and 7:
Unit 5 – Plan, lead and evaluate sport/physical activity sessions in the community
Unit 6 – Plan, lead and evaluate sport/physical activity sessions for disabled people
Unit 7 – Plan, lead and evaluate sport/physical activity sessions for older people

Extra-Curricular and Enrichment Programme
The Department has an extensive enrichment programme offered to ALL students across the school. During the week there is a regular programme of well supported clubs and activities competing in a variety of inter -school sport competitions ranging from local, regional and national competitions. The PE department support this with inter-house competitions in a range of activities.
The department also offer clubs to encourage a greater number of students to just simply enjoy taking part in physical activity in order to improve their individual performance and understanding of the importance of physical activity.
The department organise a Mental Health week offering activities to encourage and promote mental health in young people; the week will culminate in students either completing in a ‘Ridgeway Run’ or Mini London Marathon challenging students to participate in a 5K multi-terrain run.
The PE Department also takes part in many enriching sporting experiences, for example, trips to watch sporting events and sports tours abroad. At Ridgeway Academy we feel strongly that these trips are a valuable part of the students’ whole school experience and entitlement. Aside from encouraging positive and rewarding relationships with other students and staff, these experiences make students feel a part of our school and it develops their sense of belonging and pride. There is also an annual sports presentation evening.
