School Sports Partnership
“Working together to provide high quality Physical Education and Sport opportunities for all.”
Ridgeway Academy is proud to be the hub-site for the Welwyn Hatfield School Sports Partnership, which is managed by Sam Cooper. The Welwyn Hatfield School Games Partnership is a collaboration of 33 primary, 8 secondary and 3 special schools. The partnership is lucky to have School Sports Co-ordinators based in all 4 secondary schools to help increase the opportunities for young people to access high quality PE and school sport across the Welwyn and Hatfield districts.
The Partnership offers a broad and varied competition structure, allowing students to represent their schools in a range of sports. The School Games inspires young people to be physically active for life through positive experiences of daily activity and competition. In addition, the School Games deliver physical activity via a local network supported nationally, creates opportunities and experiences that young people will enjoy and supports the wider development of young people. School Games competitions progress to the following advancing levels:
- Level 1 – sporting competition for all students in school through intra-school competition.
- Level 2 – individuals and teams are selected to represent their schools in local inter-school competitions.
- Level 3 – the county/area will stage multi-sport School Games festivals as a culmination of year-round school sport competition.
The partnership also offers the opportunity for students to take on important leadership roles, liaising with local primary school children and help facilitate at sporting events.
Main areas of strategy include:
- The management and organisation of Intra and Inter-School Competition as part of the national School Games programme
- Student Leadership – the identification, training and deployment of students as sports leaders from Year 5 to Year 13
- Support for Physical Education – including the planning and delivery of PE at all key stages across all schools
- Support for all Physical Education Subject leaders – including specialist CPD opportunities through three PLT days hosted at Ridgeway Academy
- Increasing participation – delivering a varied competition calendar to encourage more young people to be active and participate in sport
Our aim is to allow all students access to Physical Education, competitive sport and the opportunity to work closely with coaches, teachers and NGB’s to deliver high quality PE and ensure every student has an active, healthy lifestyle.
