Transition into Year 7
Moving from primary to secondary school is an exciting and significant event in the life of your child. When children start at secondary school they are expected to cope with a whole variety of new experiences, some of which may demand skills and abilities which they have not had to use before.
We try to make this transition as easy as possible with plenty of information and guidance available.
Open Evening
Every year we hold an Open Evening for all prospective students and their parents to view the school and listen to a speech from the Headteacher and the Head Boy and Girl. What better way to find out more about the school than to speak to some of our students who assist during the evening; many of whom were in Year 6 the previous year.
After Open Evening we also hold Open Mornings to give the opportunity for parents to view the school at work.
After being allocated a place at Ridgeway Academy; which is usually confirmed in February/March; we will write to welcome both you and your child and give details of a New Parents Information Evening in July. This is then followed by a ‘Taster Day’ where your child will have the opportunity to spend a day at the school, meet fellow students and get a taste of what life will be like when they come back in September as a Year 7 student. They will spend the morning sampling various lessons and in the afternoon have various sporting activities.

PiXL
You will use the PiXL Mathematics and PiXL Times Table app for home learning and revision. The login and password you will be given for your summer transition work will be the login and password you will have throughout your time at Ridgeway Academy.
PiXL Mathematics is aimed at all grades of GCSE topics from 1-9. Even though you will not start officially studying for your Mathematics GCSE until Year 10, the topics you cover from Year 7 are related to the knowledge you will need for your exam in year 11.
We hear how some students struggle with knowing their times tables, and the PIXL Time Table app is a fun way to get practising those skills!
